Introduction to the CBE Module

The Competency-Based Education module in Elentra offers tools to support the workflows, curriculum structure and review processes unique to the implementation of a competency or outcomes-based curriculum.

The CBE module allows institutions to build custom curriculum frameworks within the system. Instead of offering a stand-alone curriculum map or set of individually managed tag relationships, these frameworks then serve as the foundation for assessment tools and dashboard design within the module.

While the assessment options in the Assessment & Evaluation module offer curriculum tagging and even a basic adhoc workflow, the CBE module allows institutions to integrate curriculum tags into their competency-based curriculum map, which then serves as the blueprint for program and learner dashboards.

The features within the CBE module allow learners, program leadership, and administrators the ability to view a progress organized within the logic of a competency-based curriculum map. While clinical experience information may be incorporated into the CBE tools, the module is structured around outcomes-based curriculum objectives.

The CBE module allows users to:

Create curriculum frameworks

Serving as the base for the rest of the CBE module, this tool allows a program to define the relationships between curriculum tags and stages of training. Once published, the structure of this blueprint and the curriculum tags within it populate the CBE assessment tools, assessment plans and dashboards described below.

Build assessment forms based on a curriculum framework

The assessment tool options within the CBE module are pre-populated with the curriculum tag sets previously uploaded into the curriculum framework.

Set up assessment plans:

The assessment plan builder allows a program to set requirements for certain form and form templates. When active, this feature allows for automatic tracking of certain clinical contextual requirements.

Access a series of CBE Dashboards:

Depending on what framework, tags and assessment tools are enabled, users have multiple dashboard options for visualizing, organizing and tracking assessment data by area of competence and stage of training.

Since on-demand assessment tools are an essential component of competency-based education, the CBE dashboards also include features to help learners and programs track the status of user-initiated forms in various stages of completion.

Prerequisites for the CBE Module

Before building in the CBE module, institutions must first collaborate with faculty leadership to determine the structure of the CBE curriculum framework, complete with relationships between tag sets, rating scale anchors, final decisions on how tag sets will appear in the program and learner dashboards. These structural relationships cannot be altered later in the process without publishing a new curriculum version.

  1. Create a curriculum layout and curriculum period
  2. Upload the admin, faculty and student users in the Manage Users module
  3. Create the courses or programs that will support a CBE curriculum
  4. Enroll learners in a cohort or course/program list and add this group to a CBE course/program
  5. Request that CBE features are enabled for either the whole org in Elentra or for a specific course or program
  6. Create CBE type rating scales for the following (once created, these scales will need to be enabled by Elentra):
    1. Dashboard progress scale
    2. Global assessment scale for assessments
    3. Enabling Competency/Milestone scale for assessments
  7. Decide which on-demand workflows will be used for CBE forms (these workflows will need to be enabled by Elentra)
  8. Set up CBE-specific features:
    1. Create and publish a curriculum framework
    2. Create and publish a CBE curriculum (Course or Org Tree)
    3. Create and publish forms

Before proceeding with the set up CBE features, institutions must have a Curriculum Layout, Curriculum Periods as well as any Courses/Programs, Users, and Cohorts that will require access to CBE functionality. If a new program is launching a CBE curriculum, but plans to rely on an existing curriculum framework, they may be added after the initial implementation of the CBE module.

If an institution wishes to visualize rotation information in the CBE Learner and Program Dashboards, the Clinical Experience module must be active and up to date in Elentra. Competency-Based curriculum tags can then be mapped on to clinical experiences.
